Cosmetology
Overview
The Cosmetology department is designed to train students to become cosmetologists and nail technicians, and, at the same time, students may earn an Associate in Science Degree.
The program requires a certain number of hours training in cosmetology and completing a minimum number of operations in order to prepare students in meeting the requirements to sit for the California State Examination for the Cosmetology or Manicuring license.
The SCC Cosmetology Department offers a comprehensive curriculum that serves the student population by providing an outstanding Certificate and AS Degree Cosmetology Program that prepares our graduate for entry-level jobs within the industry, as well as, addressing and meeting the needs of the Sacramento community and its surrounding areas.
Students will have to pay a deposit before the start of the freshmen course. The rest of the kit will have to be paid in full by the end of the third week of the semester.

Associate Degrees
A.S. in Barbering
The course of study meets guidelines implemented by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. It is designed to train students to become licensed professionals in the barber industry. Students will receive a certificate of completion and can earn an Associate of Science Degree. The program requires a minimum of 1000 hours (2 semesters) of training, and the completion of the program requires operational credits. Students will receive proof of training to take the BBC written exam and become licensed barbering professionals. Training includes implementing health and safety, disinfecting, sanitation, and sterilization. I've included subjects in science that relate to the field. Areas of study include chemistry, bacteriology, micro-biology, hair structure, electricity, salon business, effective communication, professional development, customer relations, hair styling, thermal styling, hair cutting, hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, various facial procedures, current trends, and state board rules and regulations.
The prerequisite is to complete the BAR 100 course with a "C" or better grade within two years before the beginning semester.
In BAR 100, students will be introduced to the barbering, cosmetology, and nail technology programs offered by the cosmetology department. The course is designed to provide students with a clear understanding of program rules, regulations, procedures, and requirements. Included are the Sacramento City College policies, the SCC Campus Student Code of Conduct, and the introduction of campus services, such as EOPS, Financial Aid, Cal Works Counseling, DSPS, and Campus Police. In addition, students will be introduced to customer relations, professionalism, and team building.
Procedures: Prospective students must complete the required prerequisite BAR 100 class, with a passing grade of a “C” or better. During this course, students will designate a preference and priority for either Cosmetology or Barbering programs. These students will be randomized and added to the current list of students waiting for acceptance into their program of choice. Once students are notified about their acceptance into the program, they will need to complete the following to successfully enter the program; use permission numbers provided by program to successfully enroll, deposit 100% of required funds for mandatory kits by date indicated on acceptance email for both tasks. Students failing to do this by date indicated on acceptance email, will have their program acceptance revoked, and these students will be placed back on top of priority enrollment list for possible acceptance in the next cohort.
Recommended High School Preparation: English, math, art, basic anatomy and physiology, and introductory chemistry.
Prospective students must have completed the 10th grade.
Program Costs: Approximately $3,700.00 is estimated for the beginning barbering/ cosmetology semester, and approximately $2,500.00 is calculated for the nail technology semester for the textbook package, kit, uniforms, shoes, personal supplies, and materials. SCC Cosmetology Department requires the purchase of the digital version of the Pivot Point textbook package and computer program “The Lab,” the SCC Cosmetology/ Barber kit, or Nail Technology kit and uniforms by the first day of class. In addition, there will be costs each semester of the cosmetology program for uniforms, lab fees, program materials, supplies, etc. The cosmetology, barbering, and nail technology kits, textbook packages, and some uniform items are available at the SCC College Store. Students anticipating these costs may create a financial burden should consult the Financial Aid Office for possible assistance as soon as possible. Students need to apply for financial aid at least one semester before the start of the program.

The Barbering Associate in Science (A.S.) degree may be obtained by completion of the required program, plus the local SCC General Education Requirement, plus sufficient electives to meet a 60-unit total. See SCC graduation requirements.

To be eligible for enrollment in the program, the student must meet the following criteria:
- Be 16 years of age and have completed the 10th grade.
- Have complete the BAR 100 prerequisite course with a grade of a "C" or better.

Eligible students are selected for the program according to the following steps:
- Completing the BAR 100 prerequisite course with a "C" or better grade within two years of starting the program.

Career Information
A licensed barber professional can pursue a wide range of careers. Some are self-employed, while others work in large or small establishments. Barbers may work in the entertainment industry or specialize as platform artists, hair colorists, hair-cutting specialists, and much more. Many barbers are salon owners, managers, or educators. The field provides an opportunity to travel internationally while representing the hair industry and skincare manufacturers.

Certificates of Achievement
Art and Science of Nail Technology Certificate
This program consists of the following: beginning, intermediate, and advanced training in the art and science of nail technology. Completion of these 500 hours of theoretical and operational requirements will prepare students to meet the requirements to sit for the California State Examination in Manicuring, and will prepare students for employment. The program includes professional image, basic procedures for manicuring including hand and arm massage, basic procedures for pedicure including foot and ankle massage, acrylic nails, nail tips and wraps, gel nails including light and no-light cured, basic electric file techniques, basic airbrushing techniques, nail art and design, customer relations, professionalism, and salon business.
Recommended High School Preparation: art, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, English, and math.
Program Costs: Approximately $700.00 is required at the beginning of the semester for textbooks, kit, uniforms, and personal supplies. In addition, there will be costs throughout the semester for program materials and supplies. Students must purchase the required kit and textbooks by the end of the first week of class or they may be dropped from the program for that semester. The student kit, textbooks, and some uniform items are available at the SCC College Store. Students who anticipate that these costs may create a financial burden should consult the Financial Aid Office for possible assistance. Career Information
Cosmetologists are employed all over the world. Many are salon owners, managers and self- employed, while others may be employed by large or small establishments. A cosmetologist may specialize as a hairstylist, hair colorist, hair cutting specialist, texture specialist, platform artist, educator, legally sit for the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology as an expert witness and/or travel all over the world, representing industry product manufactures. It is an exciting and ever changing industry with many opportunities.

This course provides instruction for those persons interested in becoming licensed cosmetologists. Individual instruction is given in practical application of the basic skills learned in COSM 110. Emphasis is placed on basic hair coloring, permanent waving, hair styling, hair cutting, manicuring, facials, and make-up. Also covered in the course are: transferring of basic training to intermediate and advanced levels in hairstyling, shaping, thermal curling, and hair straightening.

This course provides a cosmetology program orientation, with instruction on life skills, hazardous substances, basic labor laws, and physical and sexual assault awareness. Technical and theoretical knowledge is covered as it directly relates to the basic skills of all phases of cosmetology. This course combines individual and group instruction to enable students to acquire knowledge and establish a foundation in the fundamental practical skills required for all cosmetology industry-related procedures. The course emphasizes student comprehension and practice of disinfection, sanitation, and decontamination, with an additional focus on health and safety standards required by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Topics covered include skin care, hair removal, nail technology, haircutting, scalp treatments, thermal and wet hairstyling for all textures, permanent waving, relaxing, hair coloring, and lightening. Specialized areas of study cover eyelash enhancements and balayage techniques. This class was formerly known as Basic Skill Building in Cosmetology - Laboratory.
