Cardiovascular Technologist

Overview

The Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) program at Sacramento City College’s Davis Center prepares students to become essential members of the healthcare team, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions. CVTs play a critical role in patient care by operating advanced imaging and monitoring equipment, assisting physicians during invasive procedures, and ensuring accurate data collection to support life-saving interventions.

The program is structured over four semesters, each building on the last to develop both technical expertise and clinical judgment. In the first semester, students establish foundational knowledge and laboratory skills, focusing on cardiovascular equipment, instrumentation, and essential math concepts needed for clinical proficiency. The second semester advances into cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology, emphasizing the application of these principles in invasive lab settings and clinical observations.

During the third semester, students concentrate on reducing health risks, promoting wellness, and preventing complications while gaining hands-on experience with diverse patient populations across various healthcare environments. The fourth semester integrates all prior learning, focusing on complex interventional cardiovascular procedures and patient care scenarios. Students develop advanced skills in critical thinking, leadership, decision-making, and ethical responsibility while working under the supervision of licensed physicians and faculty in acute care settings.

Throughout the program, students are expected to retain and apply knowledge from previous semesters, ensuring continuous growth and readiness for real-world clinical practice. This comprehensive training makes the CVT program an integral part of the healthcare system, preparing graduates to deliver high-quality, patient-centered cardiovascular care.
