Tutoring is a wonderful experience to add to a resume and may give you an advantage over your peers when it comes time to apply for internships and other professional opportunities.
Types of Tutors & Learning Assistants
The Tutoring and Learning Center employs students as peer tutors to conduct one-on-one and small, informal group tutoring in a variety of subjects.
Requirements
- A grade of B or higher in the course you would like to tutor and be recommended by the instructor.
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good standing with the college.
- Have good, informal English speaking skills.
- Patient and helpful personality
If Hired
- You will be required to enroll in LTAT 310 Introduction to Individual Peer Tutoring or LTAT 311, Introduction to Group Peer Tutoring. These are 1 unit online courses designed to familiarize yourself with your role as a tutor and methods of effective tutoring.
- Commit to work a minimum of 3 hours per week for at least an entire semester.
Reading and Writing Lab tutors provide one-on-one assistance to students in all areas of reading comprehension and writing skill development. Tutors also complete some clerical duties (e.g., logging students and materials in and out). Ideal candidates are students who want to tutor English reading and writing and are: hard-working; compassionate; motivated to help other people; interested in working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment; and comfortable working with computers.
Requirements
- Successful completion of one of the following courses:
- ENGWR 300 College Composition
- ENGWR 488 Honors College Composition and Research
- BUS 310 Business Communications
- ESLW 340 Advanced Composition
- Be enrolled in at least 6 units and in good standing at the college.

If Hired
You will be required to enroll in LTAT 310 Introduction to Individual Peer Tutoring or LTAT 312 Introduction to Peer Writing Tutoring. Each course is a one-unit, online class designed to familiarize you with the role of a tutor and methods of effective tutoring.

Tutors are compensated at minimum wage and must submit a monthly timesheet signed by their instructor-supervisor.

During the Interview
You will be asked to respond to a piece of student writing and “tutor” one of your interviewers as though he or she is a student who has come in for help.
You also will be asked to provide a writing sample on a topic of our choice during the interview process

The Math/Stats Tutoring Lab is looking for students interested in employment as:
- Tutors offering to share their math/stats expertise with other students
- Federal Work Study and CalWORKs students who wish to assist with the day-to-day operations of the Lab as Student Allies
- Volunteers wishing to gain job experience
The B151 Computer Science Tutoring Lab employs students as peer tutors to conduct tutoring in CIS classes.
We need tutors for:
- Assembly
- C, C++
- Java
- Linux/Windows OS
- Security/Networking
- SQL
- Web Page Development (HTML/CSS)
- MS Office (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Requirements
- Must have completed the class with an “A” or “ B” grade in the subject you wish to tutor.
- Must have completed, at a minimum, CISP 360 if you are applying to be a programming tutor.
- Must have completed, at a minimum, CISW 327 if you are applying to be a Web page development tutor.
- Courses taken at other colleges must be equivalent to the Sacramento City College course in which you wish to tutor.
If Hired
- You must submit the appropriate employment paperwork before beginning to work as a paid tutor.
- You will be required to enroll in LTAT 310 Introduction to Individual Peer Tutoring, before or during the first semester of work as a tutor. A waiver may be granted for successful completion of a tutor education class or for earning an advanced degree.
- Expect to work approximately 6 hours per week.
- You will need to complete the LRCCD online Sexual Harassment Policies & Prevention online training every two years.
- Paid tutors earn minimum wage.
Apply to be a Computer Information Science Tutoring Lab Tutor
ELLIS Center tutors:
- provide one-on-one assistance to English as a Second Language (ESL) students in areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking
- provide English support for multilingual students in any non-ESL course at SCC
- help students connect to college resources and fill out forms.

PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) employs peer students as PAL Leaders for specific classes. These students are recommended by the instructor and have successfully completed the class or a higher-level class with an “A” or “B” grade.
