ELLIS Center (formerly ESL Lab)

The ELLIS Center is the English Language Learner and Immigrant Support Center. We support English as a Second Language (ESL) students to help improve success rates in all classes.

The ELLIS Center has a computer lab and has a wealth of materials, carefully arranged and selected for your specific level and focus. There are student tutors and an instructional assistant present during all hours that the lab is open, as well as an ESL faculty member, all happy to assist all students enrolled in the lab courses.

What are my options to get help or practice English?

Tutoring When I Need It

Students can get help on assignments when they need it. This is free and has no requirements.

You can enroll in HSER 1000 (17790) or just come to the ELLIS Center (Rodda Hall South, RHS 328) during open hours and we will help you.

Students do not need to make an appointment to meet with a tutor.

Enroll in a Lab Course

Students taking ESL Reading + Writing, ESLG (Grammar), ESLL (Listening/Speaking), or other ESL classes should register for 0.5 units of an ESL Lab course.

Labs are highly recommended for more skill-building, academic support, practice time, and increased contact with instructors to improve your chances of success in every course. You are required to attend 27 hours of lab to pass. This is about 2 hours of lab per week. There is no homework assigned in lab classes.
