As a Los Rios student, you have limited access to a suite of Google tools to help you be successful.

Los Rios Gmail
As soon as you receive your student ID number, you can use your Los Rios Gmail account for messaging within Los Rios (to other students and Los Rios employees) only. As soon as you are enroll in and pay for your first class, you can use your Los Rios Gmail to communicate outside of the Los Rios network. Your Los Rios Gmail address is " W" plus your seven-digit student ID plus @apps.losrios.edu. For example, W0000001@apps.losrios.edu. To log in to Los Rios Gmail, you must first authenticate your username and password.

Google Calendar
As soon as you receive your student ID number, you can use Google Calendar to manage your schedule of academic and college activities.

Google Docs and Google Drive
As soon as you enroll in and pay for your first class, you will have access to Google Docs and Google Drive to create and store documents related to your education in Los Rios.

Additional Google Suite Tools
Other tools in the Google suite (such as Google Classroom, Google Hangouts, and Groups for Business) will be available after you enroll in and pay for your first class.
Preferred Email
New students who apply on or after November 2, 2020 will receive all college and district communication at the email address provided on their CCCApply application. This email address is your default preferred email.
If you were a Los Rios student prior to November 2, 2020, then your default preferred email is your Los Rios Gmail account. You can change your preferred email address to something other than your Los Rios Gmail.
To change your preferred email, log in to eServices and follow these steps:
- Click on Profile.
- Select Contact Details.
- Select the email you want to use.
- Check the box next to Preferred.
If you are a student and also a Los Rios employee, then your Los Rios business email is set to preferred by default.
Los Rios Gmail and Canvas
Los Rios uses the Canvas learning management system for its classes. Your Los Rios Gmail account is your default preferred email for Canvas communications.
To change your Canvas preferred email, log in to Canvas and follow these steps:
- Click on Account.
- Click on Settings.
- Click on +email address.
- Click on Register Email.
- Confirm email address by going to your new email and finishing the registration process.
- Modify notifications to send to the new email address.

Additional Uses of Los Rios Gmail
Please note that you will use your Los Rios Gmail address to access important student services, including financial aid refunds. Make sure you memorize your Los Rios Gmail address and use it when prompted.
Los Rios has partnered with Google to provide Los Rios students with a free email service. Your Los Rios Gmail is "W" plus your seven-digit student ID number plus @apps.losrios.edu. For example, W0000001@apps.losrios.edu.
When you log in to your account, Los Rios first authenticates your username and password and then sends you to Google to view your Los Rios Gmail.
Students need a Los Rios Gmail account for Canvas – our learning management system – as well as other vital student services, including telehealth.
Though you can use a personal email address as your preferred email account for college and district communications, you will need your Los Rios Gmail account for the Canvas learning management system as well as some other college resources and services.
New Students
A student's Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps account is created after a new student submits a college application for any of the Los Rios colleges and the application is successfully processed. Once a student receives their student ID number, they have limited access to Los Rios Gmail. Students will gain full access to Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps once they are officially enrolled in and have paid for classes.
Returning Students
Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps accounts are removed for students who have not had enrollment activity for over two years. If a returning student submits a new application, then their Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps account will be recreated and they will have limited access. They will gain full access to Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps once they are officially enrolled in and have paid for classes.
If you are having trouble logging in to Los Rios Gmail, then it could be a browser issue. If you have a personal Gmail account, then your browser uses "Active Cookies" when connected. You may need to clear your internet cookies and browser cache or use a different browser for Los Rios Gmail.

Download and Install Firefox
- Open another browser (such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Safari) and go to Firefox Browser.
- Click on the button that says "Download Firefox" and begin to install the browser.
- At the end of the installation, it will ask you if you'd like to Import your settings and favorites from another browser. You must change the option to: "Don't Import Anything".
- Once the installation finishes, restart your computer.
When your computer restarts, open the Firefox browser and try logging in to Los Rios Google Apps.

Your Los Rios Gmail address is "W" plus your seven-digit student ID number plus @apps.losrios.edu. For example, W0000001@apps.losrios.edu.
Los Rios Gmail is a separate account that allows you to send and receive email using the losrios.edu address. If you have your own Gmail account outside of Los Rios, then it will not impact your Los Rios Gmail account, as they are two different accounts.
Yes, students can access Los Rios Gmail on a smart phone through a browser.
View Email Through Browser
Use your phone’s internet browser to visit Los Rios Gmail. Log in using your https://sso.losrios.edu to access your email.
You cannot change your Los Rios Gmail display name, but you can change your reply name, which is displayed when you send an email.
- Log in to Los Rios Gmail.
- Click on the settings gear icon and select Settings.
- Under Settings, click on Accounts.
- Under Accounts you will see a section titled Send mail as: – click on the Edit Info link.
- There is a radio button by Name where you can enter the name you would like to appear when you send emails.
Your updated name will appear in the from box followed by your Los Rios Gmail address.
No, Google will not share your personal information.
Google is committed to upholding the privacy of your personal information. There is a contractual obligation in place for Google to strictly respect the privacy of Los Rios students and employees. Google also will not use information in the apps.losrios.edu apps to inform their advertising if Los Rios employees and students use other Google apps. Google has agreed that students' data is subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Google has agreed to comply with its obligations under FERPA.
Yes, you can forward your Los Rios Gmail to a personal email account. Use the following Google instructions for how to automatically forward Gmail messages to another account.
Make sure to follow the instructions all the way to the end and test it once you are done.
We have had reports that users with special characters in their passwords experience problems logging in to their Los Rios Gmail. If your password contains any characters that require you to hold the shift key and press a number at the top of the keyboard, then you may have problems logging in.
For example, any of the following have occasionally prevented users from being able to log in to Los Rios Gmail: !, @, #, $, %.
If your password contains any of the following characters, then consider changing your password to only contain uppercase and lowercase letters, and numbers. To change your password click on Password Help Need to add the link to “Password Help”
Check your spam or junk folder. If you find your "Welcome to Los Rios" email in Spam, then change the settings on your personal email account (either the spam or junk email settings) to accept emails from @apps.losrios.edu. This is sometimes called the "Allowed Senders" or "Safe Senders" list.
When you compose an email in Los Rios Gmail, begin typing your instructor's first or last name in the "To" box. You will see a list of suggested names to select from. To make sure you select the correct name, it's best to type both the first and last name.
Los Rios employees have a Los Rios Gmail account activated by default when their account is created. Any emails sent to your Los Rios Gmail account will be forwarded to your official Microsoft Outlook Exchange mailbox.
This is controlled, and can be changed, from inside your Los Rios Gmail account.
- Click on the settings gear icon, the click See All Settings.
- Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, Gmail doesn't allow you to send or receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe). Executable files can contain harmful code that might cause malicious software to download to your computer. In addition, Gmail doesn't allow you to send or receive corrupted files, files that don't work properly.
You can't send or receive the following file types: .ade, .adp, .bat, .chm, .cmd, .com, .cpl, .exe, .hta, .ins, .isp, .jse, .lib, .mde, .msc, .msp, .mst, .pif, .scr, .sct, .shb, .sys, .vb, .vbe, .vbs, .vxd, .wsc, .wsf, .wsh.
Messages containing executable file types will be bounced back and returned to the sender automatically. Gmail won't accept these file types, even if they're sent in a zipped format. Here are some examples of zipped formats: .zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz, .rar.
If you are not receiving Los Rios email, check the following:
- Are you expecting your Los Rios Gmail to be forwarded to your personal email account? Validate you have set up mail forwarding correctly (see instructions on this page for "Can a student forward their Los Rios Gmail to their personal email account?").
- Check your spam or junk folder. If you find Los Rios email in your spam/junk folder, then change the settings on your personal email account (either the spam or junk email settings) to accept emails from @apps.losrios.edu. This is sometimes called the "Allowed Senders" or "Safe Senders" list.)
Google Play is disabled for Los Rios Google Apps. To access Google Play content, you will need to use a Google account other than your Los Rios Google Apps account.
Limited Access for One Year
You will have limited access in Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps for one after your last enrollment.
Account Removal After Two Years
Your Los Rios Gmail account will be removed after two years of non-enrollment. This time starts after your last enrollment.
Please move any important data from your Los Rios Gmail account before two years has passed since your last enrollment. Once your Los Rios Gmail and Google Apps account is deleted, neither Los Rios nor Google can retrieve your data.
