Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa – Beta Eta Psi chapter is a service-oriented, student-led honor society at Sacramento City College.
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is an international honor society for two-year colleges. PTK offers recognition of academic excellence, scholarships, career placement resources, leadership development, and service opportunities. It is the only two-year college honor society whose members are automatically nominated for the national dean’s list.
Why Join Phi Theta Kappa?
Students who join the SCC chapter (Beta Eta Psi) of Phi Theta Kappa International automatically receive the designation “Phi Theta Kappa Member” on their official transcripts.
The Beta Eta Psi chapter provides support for Phi Theta Kappa members to travel to regional conferences and conventions to present papers and receive awards (information on the NV/CA Region). The Beta Eta Psi chapter of PTK also promotes many service events, such as Completion Corps (C4) and EarthWeek, and lectures on campus.
Most college application and scholarship committees look for students who have leadership skills and have an interest in community service. Phi Theta Kappa at SCC is your chance to get involved and boost your college applications.
Phi Theta Kappa members also have access to leadership/scholarship/transfer resources such as PTK Edge. One of the most exciting activities for our chapter is the Honors In Action project.
How to Join
Students must:
- be enrolled in at least .5 unit of coursework at SCC
- have completed at least 12 units of coursework leading to an associate degree or transfer
- have at least a 3.5 GPA
Students who meet these criteria are automatically nominated by the SCC President. They will receive an email invitation to apply from Phi Theta Kappa International in February or September.
Eligible students must then complete the online application, which includes a one-time $90 fee (students can use EOPS funds to cover this fee).
Students will then be inducted into PTK at a Spring or Fall semester ceremony. After induction, members must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
A provisional member of Phi Theta Kappa shall be a student who, in the opinion of the local chapter, has shown an active interest in the affairs of the Society and who serves the Society in some special capacity, but who does not meet the full requirements for active membership in the Society.
A provisional member shall not have the right to vote, hold office, or to represent the chapter at meetings of the Society.
The Service Memberships offers Sacramento City College students who are interested in becoming Phi Theta Kappa members but do not have the GPA.
Donate to PTK
This is not where you would pay the PTK application join fee.
Your financial contribution helps to waive the membership fee for less financially advantaged students, sponsors leadership conferences for prospective officers, and helps members expand the realm of possibilities for expanding the Sacramento City College program.
