Umoja-SBA

Umoja is a Kiswahili word meaning “Unity”, and SBA (pronounced ‘say-bah’) is a Kemetic term meaning “teaching, wisdom, and study.”

The Umoja-SBA learning community is committed to the academic success, personal growth, and development of students of African Ancestry, as well as other students of diverse ancestries, with an emphasis on first-year college students.

We aspire to nurture your intellectual and spiritual growth in a communal space intended to enhance learning that inspires knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.

Through dedicated course offerings and the nurturing of our students and community, we strive to:

  • increase retention and success rates of SCC students
  • create sacred spaced for learning, teaching, character development, and digital literacy
  • enhance educational experiences by introducing historical, cultural, and socio-political ideas from an African/African American and Multi-Cultural perspective
  • encourage the use of multimedia technology to inspire critical thinking, creativity, leadership development, and community-building

This program is one of the support services offered within the ASHÉ Center in collaboration with Black Student Union.
