What We Offer
We are here to talk with you about any writing that you are working on.
- We cannot write any parts of the assignment for you or edit a paper for you.
- We can talk about grammar or editing if that is something that you want to talk about, but our priority is helping you learn how to revise and edit.
Timing Your Tutoring
We encourage students to schedule appointments before the day an assignment is due.
- Scheduling an appointment before the day your assignment is due will allow for more time to revise your work before submission.
Exam Help
If you are working on an exam of any kind, the Writing Center needs to know your instructor approves of you discussing it during a tutoring session.
- Some instructors penalize students for bringing an exam to a tutoring session, so we ask that you check with your instructor and provide us with proof of any kind that they don’t mind if you discuss the exam with a writing tutor.
We Recommend an Appointment
Please schedule an appointment in advance if you wish to be seen by a tutor.
- The Writing Center can become quite busy throughout the semester, and we cannot guarantee you will be seen without an appointment.
- Drop-ins are still welcome, but making an appointment in advance will better ensure you get a spot.
- Making an appointment also gives us a better opportunity to match up your needs (course, assignment, etc.) with the skills of a specific tutor.
Please Be on Time
Please be on time or let us know if you are running late. We will only hold your appointment for 10 minutes if we have not heard from you.
- After 10 minutes, we may give your appointment to another student if you have not notified us you are on your way.
Canceling an Appointment
If you need to cancel an appointment, please inform us at least one hour before the appointment starts so we may give your spot to another student waiting for an appointment.
- If you are going to miss an appointment, please call/text us at (916) 382-2820 or drop by the Writing Center to let us know.
- If you repeatedly cancel appointments without at least an hour of notice or miss appointments without notifying us, we may ask you to only do drop-ins for the remainder of the semester.
Session Length
Tutoring sessions usually last 55 minutes, but they may be shorter if you and your tutor finish discussing your assignment earlier.
- If you know in advance that you will need to leave a session early, please let your tutor know at the beginning of the appointment, so they may budget your time appropriately.
Appointment Limits
Students are welcome to schedule or drop in for up to one tutoring session per day and two per week.
- This includes both drop-in sessions and scheduled appointments, as well as appointments shorter than 55 minutes.
- This ensures that we can see as many students as possible, as we are often fully booked.
- Students registered with DSPS may have an additional appointment each week. Please let us know if this applies to you.
We can only work with students who are currently enrolled at SCC.
- If you are not currently taking any classes at SCC, unfortunately, we cannot work with you on your writing assignments.
