What We Do Together

Students in Puente work closely with their counselor, English instructor, and mentor to prepare for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Students should be prepared to participate in the following:

English Instruction

Puente students take two consecutive writing classes, ENGL C1000 and ENGL C1001. These classes provide a supportive environment for Puente students to build confidence in their writing skills. The content of both courses focuses on LatinX social, political, and cultural issues.

Counseling

Puente students work individually with the Puente counselor until they transfer from Sacramento City College, exploring career options, developing an academic educational plan, and identifying lifetime goals. Students visit UC, CSU, and other four-year institutions.

Mentoring

Each Puente student is matched with a mentor who is a professional in the local community. Mentors share their knowledge and experiences with students and provide a window into “real-life” work environments. The network of trained Puente mentors provides many resources for the Puente students, their families, their colleges, and the community.

Puente Mas

Puente Mas is designed for students pursuing a STEM-related major. In addition to taking English, Ethnic Studies, and Human Career Development courses their first year, Puente Mas students also take STAT C1000 or Pre-Calculus courses to build a strong foundation for forthcoming major-prep STEM courses. Puente Mas curriculum, mentoring, and fieldtrips are STEM-focused.

Puente Classes

Puente classes include English Writing (Fall: ENGL C1000 and Spring: ENGL C1001. ) and Human Career Development (HCD) courses.

The HCD classes are provided by SCC Counseling staff, and focus on building group cohesion and a sense of familia amongst the students. Students will meet their mentors and participate in mentor activities. A variety of Puente social, political, and community field trips supplement the academic program.

In the spring, we concentrate on ensuring transfer success through fulfilling transfer requirements, meeting university representatives, and campus tours. We conclude the year with a family gathering and celebration.
