Being a student and parent brings unique challenges that only another parent truly understands.
Parent to Parent (P2P), in partnership with the Mentor Collective, enhances the student experience by connecting CalWORKs students with a mentor from within the program. P2P mentees are paired with someone invested in their success—a person ready to listen, inspire, help navigate challenges, and recognize opportunities.
Additionally, P2P mentors serve as a critical part of a student’s success team by serving as a proxy for your dedicated counselor and the CalWORKs program. Mentor Collective's online platform provides training and resources for student mentors and makes it easy for mentors and mentees to connect.

How It Works
How Are You Matched?
Students are matched with mentors based on common interests, background, academics, and professional aspirations. To get started, students and mentors register and complete an online survey to paint a holistic picture of their interests and experiences. From there, mentees and mentors are paired with a dedicated CalWORKs Counselor for enhanced case management.
Once matched, you two decide how you want to connect–by email, phone, text, or in-person–and how often you want to do so.
Students, your mentor will:
- Assist you in connecting and communicating with your Counselor.
- Help you navigate the college environment.
- Balance the demands of college, parenting, and life.
- Have similar interests, hobbies, and experiences as you.
- Meet or video chat with you on a regular basis.
- Encourage you to set goals and getting involved on campus.
