Our Commitment to Safety
Sacramento City College is committed to maintaining a safe campus and comprehensive safety program. Our faculty and staff are trained to respond to emergency and safety incidents.
Campus Police Center
Our campuses and centers are routinely patrolled by Los Rios Police Department (LRPD). LRPD employs sworn police officers who are responsible for protecting life and property across the district.

- Familiarize yourself with the layout of the campus. View maps of all SCC campuses. Survey the campus while classes are in session and after dark to ensure academic buildings, walkways, facilities, and parking lots are adequately secured and well-lit.
- Share your class schedule with your parents and trusted friends and give them your telephone numbers.
- Tell a friend or roommate where you are going and what time you expect to return.
- Plan the safest route to your destination and choose well-lit, busy pathways and streets. If you see any facility issues which need attention (such as a burnt-out light), please contact Operations at (916) 558-2543.
- At night, stick to well-lit areas whenever possible and avoid alleyways or shortcuts through isolated areas.
- Travel in groups and avoid going out alone at night. Make arrangements with other classmates to park near each other so you can walk together at night.
- Walk near the curb and avoid shrubbery or other places of potential concealment.
- Stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you.
- Don't overload yourself with bags or packages and avoid wearing shoes that restrict your movements.
- Walk with a confident stride; keep your head up and look around. Avoid texting and talking on the phone while walking since it is easy to not pay attention to your surroundings.
- Carry your purse close to your body and keep a firm grip on it; carry your wallet in an inside coat pocket or your front pant pocket.
- Keep your keys separate from your purse or backpack. Carry keys in your hands with the keys between your knuckles.
- If you are being followed, change direction and go to the nearest building or blue emergency phone, call the Los Rios Police. Note the description of the person following you.
- Escorts are available if you don't feel comfortable walking to your car alone. To request an escort, call (916) 558-2221 and press "0".
- Program the Los Rios Police number in your phone: (916) 558-2221.

Annual Clery Report
Each year, Los Rios Police Department publishes the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Report (also know as the Annual Clery Report). This report includes information about our safety and security policies and specific crime statistics.
Reporting a Crime or Theft
Emergency Phones
There are blue light emergency phones located throughout campus that connect you directly to Los Rios Police Dispatch. Use these phones to call police in an emergency or if you need an officer dispatched to your location.
The following are examples of emergencies:
- Someone needs medical aid
- There is a fire in progress
- There is a crime in progress
- There has been a traffic accident
- There is a disruptive person or group on campus
The following are examples of non-emergency reasons you might want an officer dispatched to your location:
- Keeping the peace at a civil protest
- Escorting you to your vehicle
- Fund transfer (if you are staff)
- There is a faulty fire or intrusion alarm
- You need a classroom or facility unlocked or locked and facilities staff are unavailable
- You need access to a facility after normal operating hours
Emergency Alert System
Los Rios will provide critical information to students and employees in an emergency or disaster via an emergency alert system. Emergency alerts are issued via text, phone calls, and email. Make sure you receive emergency alerts – update your contact information today!

Safe Los Rios – Safety Communications Tool
Safe Los Rios is a safety communications tool for students and employees. It has two components – a free mobile app and a desktop alert.
The Safe Los Rios mobile app is free for Android and iOS devices. Features of the app include the ability to:
- Discreetly contact and share your location with Los Rios Police in an emergency using the app's panic button.
- Request a campus safety escort from LRPD to walk you to your vehicle or other campus location.
- Send your location to a friend so they can track you in real-time as you walk across campus and arrive safely at your destination.
- Submit a non-emergency crime tip.
- Access campus safety procedures for emergencies that may occur on campus.
- Access support resources.
The Safe Los Rios app is available for download by Los Rios students and employees (guests can download it with limited functionality). Features involving real-time responses from Los Rios Police are limited to the boundaries of the campus. The app is intended for use by students and employees.
