About the Program

Florence is an exciting city in which to live and study. The capital of the Tuscan region, Florence is set in central Italy amidst the golden hills of Tuscany. The birthplace of the Italian Renaissance provides the perfect backdrop to immerse yourself while studying renowned Italian writers and thinkers like Dante, Petrarch, and da Vinci. On an afternoon stroll through the streets of Florence, you can admire the architecture of Brunelleschi's famous cathedral and the Giotto and Baroque sculptures adorning the fountains of the city. You can linger in at the Uffizi Gallery with its vast collection of paintings and sculptures, and view the magnificent Santa Croce, where Galileo, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli are buried. Discuss art with Florentine painters in their studios, explore the bookshops near Via Cavour, and watch the sunset from one of the most popular spots in Florence, the Ponte Vecchio, a 14th-century bridge spanning the River Arno. Sample the fresh produce in the many open-air markets and, of course, enjoy dessert in the birthplace of gelato.

The Florence program also includes an excursion to Rome, the eternal city. Together we will explore the capital of Italy's incredible history, including a guided tour and reserved entrance to the Vatican, Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. After marveling at the beauty of the Sistine Chapel, you can relax on the Spanish Steps and throw your coin in the Trevi Fountain, ensuring you will return one day to Rome.

Scholarships and Other Funding Opportunities

Scholarships are available through the Gilman International Scholarship Program and the Los Rios Foundation. The Gilman program application closes in March with awards announced in April/May. The Los Rios scholarship opens mid-January and closes late February with awards announced in March. Another scholarship opportunity is through the Fund for Education Abroad.
