Course Challenge/Credit

Students transferring into the SCC VN Program may obtain credit for previous education and/or experience.

  1. a. Transfer Credit: Applicants who have successfully completed previous nursing education within the last five years may qualify for transfer credit. This may include:
    • Accredited vocational or practical nursing courses.
    • Accredited registered nursing courses.
    • Accredited psychiatric technician courses.
    • Armed Services nursing courses
  2. Credit for CNA Coursework: applicants with verified certified nursing assistant coursework will be granted a credit of 16 hours for skills lab in first semester (VN 120) for objectives that correlate with CNA skills. This will apply to students with proof of coursework within 5 years of the application date for the program. Transcripts of coursework will be submitted.
  3. Procedure
    • Submit application and official transcripts by specified annual application date.
    • Credit will be granted based on content and hours of the transferring courses and comparability to time allotted for the subject within the SCC VN Program for RN, Psych technician, VN or PN coursework, or Armed Services nursing courses. A transfer/challenge student must complete VN140 to receive a Certificate of Achievement in the VN program.
      Written and/or performance assessments may be required, but is for remediation purposes only.
    • Students receiving skills lab credit for CNA coursework will sign an acknowledgement of 16 hours to be credited at the beginning of VN 120. Students may waive the hours and attend lab. Waived hours will be in writing on the acknowledgement.
      • Faculty will identify the lab credit hours that correlate with the CNA skills and objectives reflected in their coursework per the course schedule.
      • Practical examination may be required for skills, but is for remediation purposes only.
      • Signed acknowledgement will be placed in the student’s file.
