You’re Invited: Celebrate City!

Jessica Falor-Ward

To my fellow Panthers and SCC Supporters,

I am so excited to invite you back to Sacramento City College for an afternoon that is truly special to me: Celebrate City!

Whether you haven’t walked these brick-and-mortar halls in years or you’re a regular on campus, there is an energy here right now that I can’t wait to share with you. This isn't just an open house—it’s Belonging in Action.

We are opening our doors wide to show you how we are launching the next generation of professionals. From the high-tech simulations in our Nursing Labs to our brand-new, region-leading Air Traffic Control program, the pathways our students are taking are nothing short of inspiring.

I know how busy life gets, but I hope you’ll carve out a couple of hours to join us. Bring your family, a neighbor, or a future Panther who should see what we’re all about. This is a day for everyone!

Warmly,

Jessica Falor-Ward

Alumni Profile: Steve Thorpe

Sacramento City College Alum & Faculty Member

After leaving high school early and spending time in the military, Steve Thorpe found his way to Sacramento City College in 1969, a turning point that would shape the rest of his life.

Like many students, Steve faced significant financial challenges. Before his GI Bill benefits arrived, he couldn’t afford textbooks and remembers standing in the bookstore aisles reading assignments. Despite working hard, the pressure of rent, books, and daily expenses nearly forced him to leave college more than once.

With perseverance—and a part‑time job—Steve stayed the course. He earned his degree from City College, went on to complete both a B.A. and M.A., and built a long and meaningful career in law enforcement. His journey eventually brought him back to SCC, where he began teaching in 1977, joined the faculty full‑time in 1991, and continues to teach part‑time today.

“City College changed the course of my life,” Steve shares. “It gave me an education, a career, and nearly five decades of meaningful work.”

Today, Steve gives back in a powerful way. As a committed supporter of the Los Rios Student Emergency Fund, he helps ensure today’s students don’t face the same financial barriers that once threatened his education. The fund provides fast, one‑time support to students experiencing unexpected crises covering expenses like emergency bills, housing challenges, or car repairs so they can stay enrolled and on track.

Steve’s story is a reminder of the lasting impact Sacramento City College has on its students and how alumni continue that legacy by supporting the next generation.

First pitch at 5:00 pm.
