Rules

General Rules

  • No electronic devices, notes, or printed materials will be allowed during the competition.
  • All problems are presented in terms of x, your solutions must be in terms of x.
  • Any solutions to integrals solved with trigonometric substitution must be presented in algebraic form.
  • You do not need to include “+ C” in your answers.
  • You do not need to include absolute value bars around arguments of logarithmic functions.
  • Answers must be in closed form (no series solutions).

Qualifying Round Rules

  • You’ll have 20 minutes to complete the five qualifying round problems.
  • The second page shows all five of the qualifying problems and has space for your solutions.
  • Only write your name and answers on the answer page (page 2).
  • All your scratch work should be done on the scratch paper. Keep it organized, clearly labeled, and turn it all in.
  • The scratchwork will only be graded if we need to assign partial credit to break ties.

Spectator Rules

  • All spectators should maintain silence while competitors are solving integrals.
  • Applause is welcome at the end of each round.
  • Conversations among spectators between rounds of competition are encouraged.

Competitive Round Rules

  • Qualifying students will compete in groups of up to 3.
  • All participants that made it to the competitive portion of the Integration Bee will wait in a separate room while the judges select the integral for that round. Cell phones, or other forms of communication, are not permitted while waiting to compete for the round.
  • The groups will be brought in to solve the round’s integral, then will spectate while the remaining contestants solve the same integral.
  • Each contestant will be allowed one “miss” during the competition. Upon the second miss-evaluation of an integral, the contestant is out of the competition.
  • If all of the contestants miss the same integral during a round, it will not be considered as a “miss” for any of the contestants.
  • The judges have full discretion as to what integrals will be issued throughout the contest, and as to the correctness of answers.
  •  contestant may indicate they are finished with an integral by turning away from the board to face the judges. At that point, their answer is final and may not be revised.
  • An official timekeeper will determine the amount of time allotted for each integral. The time for each integral will be announced, and a one-minute warning will be given. If all contestants signal that they are finished before the time is up, then the judges may stop the time. The judges have the discretion to extend the announced time, but not to shorten it.
  • All of the contestants who make it to the competitive rounds may receive a t-shirt. The last five contestants surviving elimination will be awarded additional prizes.
