President's Message

Dear SCC,

First-time visitors to Sacramento City College almost always comment on the beauty of our campus. From the stately brick buildings to the towering sycamores, oaks, and redwoods, our college makes a good first impression. Indeed, it’s one of the most stunning places in Sacramento.

However, beyond the picturesque qualities of the campus, I am even more impressed by SCC’s people. Our college Mission Statement, in referencing “The People’s College,” emphasizes the way our institution on Freeport Boulevard welcomes all people who walk through our doors. SCC is a community of students and employees, but we are also part of a much larger community who turn to the college to pursue careers, seek job training, and expand on their skills and talents. As a former English professor, I notice in particular the possessive apostrophe in “People’s College.” This college belongs to all of us. Most especially, this college is here for the students, those currently enrolled but also those community members who have been in our classrooms in the past or who may come here in the future. Every student regardless of background, age, or ethnicity has a place among the brick and trees of Sacramento City College. It is also the college of our excellent faculty, classified professionals, and administrators, each of whom is part of the overall community and dedicated to helping every student.

I have had the good fortune of working at SCC for over three decades. In those years I have seen the magical work done by our people and the rich connection established between employees, students, and community. Sure, our campus is beautiful, but the people are the heart and soul of the college. If you are a potential student, know that this place is for you. We have the degrees that will set you up for a successful transfer to a university and the career education pathways that local industries stand ready to hire from. We also have great options for people who want just a few classes to help you take the next step in your career. Even if you’re not sure what direction you are headed in yet, we have friendly, non-judgmental people who are happy to help you in that process of discovery. This is your college. Welcome to your community!
