The Sacramento City College Chemistry Department is proudly hosting the SCC Undergraduate Research Initiative (SCCURI) Undergraduate Research Conference and Awards (URCA) on May 7th and 8th in the Natural Sciences Building on the SCC main campus.
The conference will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Chris Dicus, Ph.D. in Chemistry and Senior Process Scientist II at SK pharmteco in Rancho Cordova. He will be speaking about his career trajectory and his work towards keeping pharmaceutical manufacturing in the United States in a talk entitled "Continuous Processing: Advanced Synthetic Modalities in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing".
Friday's highlights include a morning poster session with 24 SCC students presenting 16 posters in three different categories: General Posters, Computational Chemistry, and Instrumental Analysis. After the awards luncheon, there will be an afternoon session of in person oral presentations, a first for the conference.
Thursday night will feature oral presentations on Zoom from 6-8pm and includes the conferences first contribution from Folsom lake College.
Introducing different sessions of the conference will be SCC MESA Faculty Coordinator Lorena Jauregui, SCC President Albert Garcia, SCC Vice President of Instruction Devoun Stewart, SCC Associate Vice President of Instruction Jennifer Laflam, and Dean of Natural Sciences Paula Cardwell. The conference is open to the public. The awards luncheon is by invitation only.
Students can participate in four semesters of undergraduate research (UR) at SCC. Three of the courses are CHEM 484: Advanced General Chemistry - Honors, CHEM 485: Research in Chemistry I - Honors, and CHEM 486: Research in Chemistry I – Honors. To participate in CHEMT 429: Research in Chemistry, students must be part of the Chemical Technology program.
The Chemistry Department works closely with the SCC Math Engineering Science Achievement Program and the SCC Honors Program to develop as many opportunities with as much student support as possible.
The SCC UR program has an ongoing collaboration with Prof. Osvaldo Gutierrez's group at UCLA to involve SCC students in cutting edge computational organic chemistry projects. This summer SCC student Allan Godinez will travel to UCLA to participate in person in UR in Prof. Gutierrez's group. A number of students who have participated in the SCC UR program have also received offers to do summer research. Please see the "Latest News" portion of our website for more details.
